"Svefn-G-Englar" by Sigur Rós

Pushing this further out, these guys sing in a made-up language they call "Hopelandic", so the aural experience I think definitely falls into the category of trancending lyrical understanding, while taking you somewhere else, or reaching you in other ways. Maybe there is no specific meaning here that translates exactly, but something definitely clicks. See "Iceland".

"Te Quiero Cha Cha" by CJM (Cris Jo Morale)

As promised in an earlier comment--music and delivery transcending an understanding of the words themselves. Even if you don't know how to say upper thigh in Spanish, you'll probably get the drift here.

"1000 Nights" by Amr Diab

If, drowsy in your musical mind, slumbers the faintest proclivity for zany doumbek time signatures and moaning violins, let Amr Diab rouse the sleeping giant--the one with the finger cymbals and jangly hips, that is. To my untrained ear, this sounds like a Middle East greatest licks medley, but it can still take you there. Do I owe my possession of this one to you, Matt V.?

"Gronlandic Edit" by Of Montreal

Uncertain as to the nature of this venture as I may be, I feel moved to share this little gem from a band I have recently come to admire by way of the internets. Maybe it's the Architecture...'s sound, and the danceable spirit that reminded me. Of Montreal lead singer Kevin Barns' lyrics are whimsical, dark and bizzare, and the band owes a lot to the Beatles. But it's full of disco and groove and the vocal harmonies, let's just call them special. They sound every bit as tight live as they are on the records, and they're just alot of fun.

Guess it would be nice to give my heart to a god
but which one which one do I choose?
All the churches fill with losers psycho or confused
I just want to hold the divine in mine and forget all of the beauty's wasted

Hold Music by Architecture in Helsinki

This is a new album for me, but I have heard this song a little on the wireless. I hate it when someone describes a band by saying it sounds like another band. But this song screams B52s to me. It is the Melbourne-born bastard son of Love Shack and Rock Lobster. And on closer inspection, the lyrics appear to be written in some kind of circle ceremony, where each of the six members of the band writes one line then passes it on. To wit:

when we're sleeping in daily
there's ice on the road
i bought us a dragon
to lighten the load
he's keeping us warm
the blood keep flowing to your head
Hey i've never been stately
I'm legless at sea
my spirit has felt you since 1903
I'm trying to be normal
but there's evil in my head

Long live Fred Schneider! And Kate and Cindy...

"Guns of Brixton" by Nouvelle Vague

One of my favorite covers, even if she does mispronounce Black Mariah.

"Forshyttan" by Hedningarna

Taken by itself, each small, individual element of insanity or love or excitement or addiction is a recognizable entity, common and normal and maybe even unremarkable. But through some chemical reaction of perception or emotion, the everyday elements may combine and accelerate and swirl into a frenetic mix--a congealing and a transformation--and suddenly there's a new entity with a different life and definition and sum. I hear some epic connection between these simple components and complex conglomeration, between ancient and modern, between chaos and choreography.
